Lady Jackets break down the door, win State championship

FAYETTEVILLE — After pounding on the door for two years, the Sheridan Lady Jackets burst through.

On Saturday, May 21, the Lady Jackets captured the 2016 Class 6A State Tournament championship with a 6-0 win over the rival Benton Lady Panthers. It was the third year in a row that Sheridan reached the title game.

“They went in determined,” declared second-year head coach Tamara Strawn.

And they would not be denied.

“I’m so proud,” the coach asserted. “We have been reminding ourselves, ‘We can; we will.’ Well, we can and we did!

“These girls have earned this,” she added. “They knew the feelings going into off losing and that biter taste turned oh, so sweet on Saturday.

“This group has fought through injury, adversity, and lots of trials,” Strawn continued. “Good teams can do that. But great teams greet it and fight with heart and determination. This group is a great team!

Jackets football team finishes up spring work this week

The Sheridan Yellowjackets football team enters the final week of spring practice with most all hands on deck after the conclusion of spring sports. The Jackets were set to practice Monday through Wednesday to conclude the spring. They’ll attend a team camp and 7-on-7 competition at Ouachita Baptist University on June 8-9.

“It’s gone well,” said Jackets head coach Louis Campbell. “Of course, like any spring, the first thing you try to do is get your ninth graders, moving up to be sophomores, in the right spot, try to get them acclimated, knowing what to do and having an idea of how to do it. And making sure they’re in the right spot.

“I think that’s the biggest thing we get out of spring now because you have so many kids that play other sports and coaches in other sports,” he added. “Spring practice is hard to — if you think too much about it, you get frustrated. So you take what you’ve got and do what you can with it.”

Still, Campbell said, he and his staff found out some things about the players that were available.
