RUSSELLVILLE - Sheridan's Sarah Michael cleared a personal and school record height of 12'4" to capture the Meet of Champs title at the event held Saturday, May 14, at Russellville High School. It is believed that it's the first time for a Sheridan girl to win at the Meet of Champs since Sarah Yancey won the high jump in 1995.
From rival towns and rival high schools, conference rivals and now State championship rivals, the Sheridan Lady Yellowjackets and the Benton Lady Panthers will play each other in the 2016 Class 6A State Softball championship at Bogle Park on the campus of the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville. The contest will be Saturday at 12:30 p.m.
It’ll be the third straight trip to the finals for the Lady Jackets and a rematch of the title game of 2014 when Benton captured the crown with a 4-2 win. Last year, the Lady Jackets suffered a 3-0 loss to Greenwood in the final but, on Saturday in the semifinals, avenged that loss by ousting the Lady Bulldogs, who were the top seed from the Central Conference, 5-1. Benton won the other semifinals, 5-3, over Marion, the top seed from the East Conference.
The defending Class 6A State champion Sheridan Yellowjackets will begin defense of their title on Friday, May 13, against the winner of a first-round game between the Searcy Lions and the El Dorado Wildcats. The Jackets, who will host the State tourney beginning Thursday earned a first-round bye and the second seed from the 6A-South Conference with a 7-0 win over the Texarkana Razorbacks on Friday, May 6, behind shutout pitching from right-hander Tyler Cleveland.
Plagued by injuries, the Jackets open State at 12:30 p.m., on Friday. Searcy, the second-seeded team from the 6A-East, will play El Dorado, the fifth-seeded team from the South, on Thursday at 12:30 p.m., for the right to advance to take on the Jackets.
The young Sheridan Yellowjackets soccer team captured a 4-1 win over the Pine Bluff Zebras on Tuesday, May 3, to provide one of the highlights of their season. Joseph Tanthaphengxay scored two goals and had an assist to lead the way. Taylor Black and Corsey Speers each had goals as well.
The Sheridan Lady Jackets once again played the Texarkana Lady Razorbacks to the hilt on Friday, May 6. But a pair of controversial calls went against them late and, by virtue of a disputed play that resulted in a penalty kick, the Lady Razorbacks escaped with a 1-0 win to clinch the championship of the 6A-South Conference.
In their previous meeting at Texarkana, the Lady Jackets had played them even through regulation (1-1) only to lose on PKs in the shootout.
Earlier in the week, the Lady Jackets picked up a win by forfeit over Little Rock Hall in conference play. Hall was not able to find enough players to field a full squad.
