Barbers and Beauty Shops
In March of 2020, barbershops and beauty shops in Arkansas were ordered to close by Governor Asa Hutchinson due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Even though these businesses are now open again with guidelines in place, this executive action made us realize the importance of our barbers and stylists. In fact, barbers and stylists have been established in Grant County since the late 19th century. My own great-grandmother, Jo Wilson McNeill, was a beautician in Sheridan during the 20th century.

While senior Kaylee Mason is up at 6 a.m. getting ready to leave for school at 7 a.m., senior Faith Wentz is still sleeping in until she wakes up at around 9:30 a.m. to do her online school work.

The rise and fall of The Pines mall
On June 14, The Pines Mall closed its doors after being in business for more than 30 years. The once-lively enclosed shopping center brought people from all over southeast Arkansas, including Sheridan, to Pine Bluff to shop, eat and enjoy themselves. But shoppers have been scarce for years, and the few that were left will now be going elsewhere.
