After first hearing, Draper trial set to begin on May 29

The first of three scheduled hearings was held at the Grant County Courthouse last week in the lead up to Rusty Draper’s capital murder trial in which prosecutors are seeking the death penalty. Among the items debated during the hearing was when the trial should start. Draper is accused of killing 17-year-old Austin Moody.

Jailhouse informant says Draper confessed to killing

Capital murder suspect Rusty Draper confessed to the shooting death of Austin Moody to another inmate being held at the Sheridan Detention Center, according to documents filed in the case.

National Law Day was observed on Tuesday, May 1 and fifth-grade students from East End Elementary, Sheridan Intermediate and Poyen Elementary Schools got a lesson in the law first-hand by getting to act as the jury in a mock trial at the Grant County Courthouse.

New ordinance passed for Kohler

The Sheridan City Council passed an ordinance relating to water pretreatment requirements with Kohler at last week’s Sheridan City Council meeting.

The ordinance states that it sets forth uniform standards and requirements for users of the Publicly Owned Treatment Works (POTW) for the City of Sheridan.

PSD appoints next PHS principal

At the end of this semester, Poyen High School Principal Dennis Emerson will leave PHS for a job at the Sheridan School District. Emerson’s successor will be Laura Daniel.

Less than five minutes into last week’s Poyen School Board Meeting, the board went into an executive session to discuss personnel. When the executive session ended, Superintendent Jerry Newton announced that he had accepted Emerson’s letter of resignation the previous week, and he recommended that the board select Daniel as the new principal.

Louisiana man sentenced in fatal accident case

A Louisiana man took a negotiated plea last week for a manslaughter charge stemming from the death of a local woman who died as a result of an automobile accident in August 2017.

On Thursday Aug. 10, 2017, Grant County resident Shelby Rhodes fell victim to a fatal vehicle collision just south of Sheridan on U.S. Hwy. 167.

Governor launches work readiness program

Last Monday, representatives from Arkansas, Grant and Jefferson counties met at the State Capitol to help Governor Asa Hutchinson launch the ACT Work Ready Communities program.

At the 30-minute long event, Hutchinson told the crowd that he has been trying to get programs like this off the ground for years.

Sheridan named state's next Kick Start Community

After finishing as a runner-up last year, Sheridan has been selected as this year’s Kick Start Community.

The Kick Start Community program is a consultantship that is led by the University of Central Arkansas. Sheridan is the fifth city to be selected following Paris in 2014, Heber Springs in 2015, Lonoke in 2016 and Mena last year.

SSD announces new SJHS principal

At last week’s Sheridan School Board Meeting, Superintendent Jerrod Williams announced that the school selected Alisa Gray as the next principal of Sheridan Junior High School.

Last month, Williams announced that Sheridan High School Principal Rodney Williams had decided to retire. The board selected SJHS Principal Jason Burks to succeed Williams as SHS principal. This left a vacancy for SJHS principal.

Family Resource Center survives fire

It will take more than a fire to keep the workers at the Grant County Family Resource Center down.

After surviving a fire, the center continues to offer its help.

On March, 22, the building caught fire.
