A day of summer fun often includes swimming and water sports, smiles and laughter and happy memories from those water activities, but a recent afternoon of swimming in the Saline River around the Poyen area ended in tragedy when one Saline County man died as the result of drowning.
Gearldean Cotton Riley, 90, of Sheridan, Ark., died Tuesday, June 7, 2016 in Benton. Born May 27, 1926 in Grant County, Arkansas to the late Henry and Eliza Puckett Cotton, she grew up in Sheridan, attending Sheridan schools.
A reward fund has been established for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person(s) responsible for the vandalism of nearly 100 gravesites leaving family members heartbroken and picking up the pieces of their loved ones’ headstones and decorations along with cleaning up the grounds of the cemetery.
School is out for the summer, and teachers have the next few months off to do whatever right? Wrong, and that is often the misconception. Teachers as well as other school staff and faculty spend parts of their summers in continuing education classes, professional development workshops, etc. in order to stay up to date in their field and meet requirements. The teachers of Sheridan School District are no exception and have been hard at work over the last week doing professional development training.
A longtime Poyen teacher will contribute to the education of students all over the state. Ouida Newton has been appointed to the Arkansas State Board of Education. Newton’s term begins on July 1 and will last until June 30, 2023.
Sheridan’s Master Gardeners have taken on several projects this year, their latest being an effort to help spruce up the Grant County Courthouse where they took on a project to revitalize the flower bed in front of the court house.
In an effort to update the surveillance system at the Sheridan Detention Center, the Sheridan City Council approved the installation of a new DVR system in their regularly scheduled meeting last week that not only will store recorded footage for a longer amount of time but will also support more cameras.
