Poyen School Board discusses guns versus tasers

School security took center stage at the Poyen School Board meeting, which was held on Tuesday, April 23 at the Jerry and Ouida Newton Arena.

After a brief executive session that resulted in the approval of classified contracts, Superintendent Ronnie Kissire brought up the issue and asked the board’s thoughts on CSSO (Commissioned School Security Officer) training.

SHS students take home first place at Girls of Promise

For the past three years, Sheridan High School has had teams participating and finishing in the top five of the Girls of Promise, a conference that encourages girls to pursue higher-level science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) courses past eighth grade with goals toward careers in these fields.

Grant County Museum hosts 150th anniversary celebration May 4

Founded Feb. 4, 1869, Grant County is celebrating its 150th year as an official county this year, and in honor of the sesquicentennial anniversary, the Grant County Museum has planned a community wide celebration for May 4 on the courthouse square complete with a parade, games, music and entertainment, living history presenters, food vendors and a variety of arts and craft and business vendors.

SSD files applications for community programs

The Sheridan School Board held its regularly scheduled monthly meeting at the East End Elementary School cafeteria on Monday, April 15, with a full agenda.

Among the agenda items were a set of Community Service Learning Community Partner applications filed that were needing local and state board approval.

Town Clean-Up set for April 27

The first annual Town Clean-Up Day has been set for Saturday, April 27, just in time for the sesquicentennial celebration, which will be held the following weekend on the courthouse square. The clean-up day sponsored by Kick Start Sheridan will include volunteers helping with tasks like planting the six planters on the square and picking up trash and limbs.
