SHERIDAN SCHOOL DISTRICT TEACHERS gathered last week for a Professional Development day at the Epperson Center at Immanuel Baptist Church in Sheridan. Dr. Cassandra Erkins, a trainer with Solution Tree, helped with the training. Teachers have spent many hours now preparing for the new school year that will begin on Aug. 15.

The arrival of August means that it is once again time for the youth of Grant County to head back to school. The first day of class is next Wednesday.

Watch out for students getting on and off buses

With students returning to school this month, a month-long awareness campaign has begun to remind drivers to be careful before and after school. The theme of the campaign is “Flashing Red. Kids Ahead.”

The campaign is being led by the Arkansas Department of Education, Arkansas Association of Pupil Transportation and Arkansas School Bus Mechanics Association. This is the sixth year that this campaign has been held, but previously it only lasted three weeks.

Explaining the theme, Sheridan School District Transportation Coordinator Rhonda Harris said that a bus driver will typically turn on their lights around 300 feet before they stop. That means that within 300 feet of that bus, there is a child that will be standing near the road that could be hit if a motorist ignores the flashing lights and stop sign.

“If you hit a child, you will never get over it,” Harris said.

It is illegal to pass a stopped school bus.
